A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
The name, ‘The Duke and Coachman’ was chosen due to the strong roots of the Duke of Leinster in the town, while linking in with one of the original purposes of our beautiful historic building as a Coachman’s Inn. You will notice we have incorporated monkey images in some of our branding; legend has it that one of the children of the Duke’s family - Earl John Fitzgerald (then a baby) was forgotten about while sleeping in a bedchamber at Woodstock Castle when a fire broke out. The family had kept pet monkeys who luckily managed to break away from their chains and carry the baby to safety. Following this, two monkeys were added into the Fitzgerald coat of arms in honour of the species. You can still see this crest over the doorway of Maynooth castle today.
