Ginger Snapped Bakery & Cafe is operated by Punxsutawney native Barbie Blair and Alabama transplant Zachary Hales. Barbie's family has many ties to the town. Her maternal grandmother was a baker for the long-time bakery Ruth & Harry's which was located on Mahoning Street in Punxsutawney until it closed in 1994. On the other side of her family was London's Chocolates, established by her great-grandfather, and then passed down through her family to her father. After watching her grandmother create the many birthday cakes and other delicious desserts for her and her family, and working in the candy factory as a child with her father, Barbie developed a love of creating sweets. She became a hobby baker and has had a passion for baking ever since.
Zach has many years of restaurant management experience working for multiple restaurants in the southern states. After a change of careers led him to become a diesel mechanic, he moved to Pennsylvania in 2014 when his career shifted to the oil industry.
The duo met while Zach was pursuing another venture and after working together professionally for almost a year, together decided to pursue Barbie's dream of a bakery.
Partnering with another Punxsutawney native, Craig L. Pearce, Ph. D., the dream became a reality a year later when the space inside the historic Spirit Building was transformed.
Barbie attended The Pennsylvania State University and then worked in advertising for eleven years. During this time, her hobby began creating cakes for her children, nieces and nephews- sometimes getting requests for their next cake a whole year before. "I love being given an idea and watching it come to life. Seeing the look on someone's face when they see something I've created or take the first bite of something I've made is what makes me happy."
Zach worked as an oil-field mechanic until the industry took a downward turn. "When I met Barbie, she was helping me with my advertising for another business. We quickly became the best of friends. When I found out she wanted to open a bakery & cafe, I was immediately in."
Craig, is the Ben May Endowed Chair of Management in the Mitchell College of Business, University of South Alabama. He has authored such books as Twisted Leadership, Maven House Press; Share, Don't Take the Lead, Information Age Publishing; The Drucker Difference, McGraw-Hill; and Shared Leadership, Sage Publications. He is an international management consultant and keynote speaker specializing in executive leadership development, and an entrepreneur. After hearing the idea for the bakery & cafe, he joined in the efforts and helped guide the project into what it has become.
Ginger Snapped Bakery & Cafe is a purveyor of fine coffee and specialty drinks, as well as both classic and unique baked goods. Located at 113 N.
