In 1899 the Arizona Republic was the first newspaper to call Jerome "Wicked". A few years later in February of 1903 the New York Sun, then a thriving competitor to the New Your Times, crafted an article declaring Jerome to be the "Wickedest Town in America". Jerome was a lawless town of wild women & hard drinking men... a place saloons and dance halls lined the streets and wages were wasted in wicked pursuits. Wicked it was, and the name would stick! In March of that same year another New York magazine publication would upgrade Jerome to "city" status, warning their readers that "Jerome is a Wicked City with it's 4,000 people... Saloons, dance halls, gambling hells, houses of shame, and every damming infamy defiantly occupy the ground." Occupy the ground they did... The infamous residents numbered in the thousands and in fact, at that time almost as many people lived in Jerome as in Phoenix.
...And as they say, the rest is history. The legend of the Wicked City was born.
