Third Base Sports Bar - South Park Meadows

9600 S IH 35, Suite B500, Austin, United States     Sports Bar, Restaurant, Pub

A few short years ago three long-time Austinites Bill, Michael and Brendan came together with a few simple goals: provide their friends with a comfortable place to grab a beer, watch a game or just have some fun. It should come as no surprise then that three of Third Base’s biggest customers are the owners… spend enough time here and you’ll probably see Bill try to convince someone he invented the shot, Michael order more food than he could possibly eat or Brendan drink from his comically large beer bottle. Since the opening of the first Third Base on West Sixth in 2007, and with the he...

Threadgill's

301 W Riverside Dr, Austin, United States     Southern Restaurant, Live Music Venue, Caterer

"Threadgill's was Austin's first theme restaurant, and it's theme was AUSTIN." — The LA TIMES When John Morthland in the L.A. Times made that prophetic statement, it sounded good to me, so let's take it a bit further and claim to the 1930's through 1960's in Austin as the theme of the original Threadgill's on North Lamar Blvd. The big, new shiny one downtown sits next door to the site of the late, great Armadillo World Headquarters and contains a large portion of memorabilia from the musical hey-day of Austin in the 1970's. The juke box holds 100 albums of artists who played the 'Dillo and ...

Threadgill's Old No 1 - North Lamar

6416 N Lamar Blvd, Austin, United States     Live Music Venue, Southern Restaurant, Caterer

AUSTIN WOULDN'T BE AUSTIN WITHOUT THREADGILL'S Let’s face it. No one ever would have said “Keep Austin Weird” if Threadgill’s hadn’t made it weird in the first place. When bootlegger and country music lover Kenneth Threadgill opened his Gulf filling station just north of the Austin city limits in 1933, he had more on his mind than just pumping gas. After all, just months before he had stood in line all night to be the first person to own a beer license in the county. And soon after, his joint would become a favorite for traveling musicians interested in grabbing a drink after their...

Torchy's Tacos

1822 S Congress, Austin, United States     Ristorante fast food, Ristorante messicano, Ristorante vegetariano/vegano

Torchy's Tacos started in 2006 with a mobile trailer, a little red Vespa, and a man with a passion for good food. The founder, Mike Rypka, left an executive chef position to chase his dreams by investing everything he had into Torchy's Tacos. With a new, experimental menu ready to serve but no mouths to feed, Rypka jumped on his Vespa and started throwing out samples in an attempt to draw customers to his trailer. Before he knew it, people were rallying beside the taco stand hollering, "damn these tacos are good!" and the Torchy's Tacos' legacy began.
