Located in Chania's Harbor, Salis offers a modern twist on traditional cuisine, serving dishes from locally sourced ingredients with fine wines to pair.
A native of Sudan and descendant of African workers since the Egyptian occupation in Crete, Salis, called “Helidonakis” (Swallow) by the Cretan natives, was a hero of his time. He worked from a toddler as a boatman, unloading passengers and luggage at the shallow port of Chania, whose depths were not suited for mooring ships. He loved Greece and Crete and refused to resign in the population exchange of 1922, getting his British citizenship.
Amongst the few Muslims that remained, he graced the town with his warm and inviting smile, kind heart, and generosity. A real life “Robin Hood," sans thieving; every penny he earned he shared with those less fortunate. He will always be remembered on the “limani” (port) with his broad grin and half-lit pipe.
Now a local restaurant, as a chic alternative to its neighboring taverns, Salis takes an innovative turn on traditional Cretan gastronomy. The dishes are modern yet nostalgic, lavishly showcasing nature's menu. An artistic and unique dining experience, the calming sea and comforting aromas are sure to stimulate the senses.
