Palais L'Alcazar - Musée La Calèche Territet-Montreux

The Room known for the last 37 years as L’Alcazar was originally the Grand Ballroom of Territet’s Grand Hotel and was called “The Festival Hall”. The Festival Hall was a multi purpose room used for balls, concerts, theater and exhibitions.

The Grand Hotel was the 1st Palace in Montreux. Then The Orient Express stopped at the Territet station, not Montreux! It was also the 1st hotel in Switzerland to have telephone. The “Musée La Calèche” was it’s Winter Garden. The Grand Hotel was built in 3 stages. The portion that houses L’Alcazar was actually the 1st one built in 1840’s, however, only the commercial gallery on the ground floor was built at that time, along with an esplanade at it’s top. The the portion housing Ballroom and the Winter Garden were added later in 1895. The Grand Hotel counted many dignitaries as guests, notably Empress Sissi of Austria, who stayed often and hosted balls in what is today L’Alcazar. This wing also housed the gymnasium of the Hotel underneath the ballroom.

The Festival Hall is the epiphany of baroque with it’s sky painted ceilings and vignettes fresques of musical instruments all around. The plaster work is unrivaled, with oversized angels at each corners and gilded moldings all around.
