After a long journey in the merchant marines and a master chef on a luxury cruise liner, Bud Jones came back to San Antonio and opened his Military Drive location. Taking direction from his fathers famous “Bob Jones Restaurant” on Roosevelt Avenue, he began his journey which has now lasted over 54 years.
Once originally Walsh’s Grocery Store at the corner of Military and Commercial, Bud started serving fish and chips in October of 1958. The very day of the grand opening, he was so busy he excused himself from his customers, went out the back door and begged a lady hanging laundry to please come and help him. Bernice Housos continued to work here until she passed away in 2008.
The building has gone through many changes and additions, including a devastating fire in 1978. With the generous help and understanding of customers through the years, Bud was up and running again in thirty days.
In 1985, Bud’s daughter Kathy joined him and has committed to carry on the Bud Jones tradition. We base our success on good food for a fair price, the loyalty of our customers and the dedication of our employees, some of which have been with us for over 40 years.
