The Sharbot Lake Country Inn & The Crossing Pub, as it is known today, has had a long and varied history. The original structure was built in 1906 by Dr. H. Coutlee,who graduated from Queens University in 1882 as a Doctor of Medicine and Master of Surgery. Dr. Coutlee’s
plans were to establish his first medical office in Sharbot Lake and open a medical center and clinic with a few beds for short stays. Unfortunately, due to his untimely death, his plan never materialized and he left the building to Dan and Diana Buchanan, his manager and
housekeeper. The Buchanan’s later decided to convert the building into a bed and breakfast, and named it The Hillcrest Inn.
After Danny Buchanan’s death in 1952, Mrs. Buchanan sold the Inn to a gentleman from Perth, Ontario. Over the years, the Inn has had several name changes and a variety of owners. Today, even after all the name changes, renovations, and additions, the original building still remains more or less as it was when it was originally built. Now known as the Sharbot Lake Country Inn & The Crossing Pub, current owners Frankand Sandra White strive to protect its history.
The pub’s name, The Crossing, is both a reference to Sharbot Lake’s history as a railroad town, as well as recognition of the towns Stephenville and Stephenville Crossing in Newfoundland where Frankand Sandra White were born and raised.
In addition to the Sharbot Lake Country Inn & The Crossing Pub, the Inn also provides services such as massage therapy and chiropractic care.
