Deadmans Inn

In 1702, The Deadmans Inn, then known as Murrays, began serving the public.

Deadman’s Inn gained its name one evening in November 1798 as Lord Norbury was being driven home to Clane by stage-coach. He had spent the day sentencing insurgents to prison and was infamous as the Hanging Judge who had sentenced Robert Emmett. Palmerstown was the first stop en-route, a place to change horses if they became lame. Drivers and helpers also used this rest to take refreshments such as bread and ale.

That night, the driver of Norbury’s coach wanted to let his helper off, as he was ill. As the coach slowed down at the Palmerstown stop, Norbury asked the driver why he was stopping. The driver informed the Lord of the helper’s condition. “Move!”, the Justice roared, “or I will have ye flogged and hanged”. The driver kept going and as they passed by Murray’s Inn, the helper fell from the coach which continued on its way without stopping. When found by the locals, the helper was dead.

He was laid out at the Inn and the locals met to arrange his burial. After an RIC inquest, the coroners verdict was death by misadventure.

The man, in reality, had died of exposure. From that day forth, we were known as “The Deadmans Inn”.
Today, the pub is now under new management and trading as ‘Deadmans – Bar & Dining’ offering excellent quality food and beverages at affordable prices in a friendly and comfortable surroundings.
