Our Customers are always asking us this question. After going to the library, the county courthouse, and most importantly, talking with the locals, this is what we learned.
This building was built in 1883, complete with three-foot thick rock walls. These walls, and the ceiling are part of the original construction; sadly, they have both been repainted many times since 1883.
The building was built, and first occupied by Thomas Wilson and Sons Furniture. Their business thrived through the 1930's, and was then sold to Bronson's Furniture. The Bronsons were here through the 1960's.
In the mid-sixties, it was converted to a skating rink. the support poles in the middle of our dining room were still there and we have heard many stories of attempting to skate around them...you can imagine. Our kitchen was a snack bar, our storage room was a game room, complete with pool tables and pinball machines.
After the skating rink, this old building housed, for short periods of time, the Cowboy Church, the Magnolia Steak House, and a memorabilia store called Rock and Roll Remembers.
Blake's Cafe came to Luling in 2002, and moved to this building in 2004. We could not be happier about the location, the business, or the community. We hope someday, a hundred years from now, we will still be a part of Luling history.
