Slow Food Festival in Fiskars

THE SLOW FOOD FESTIVAL IS MOVING TO THE OLD KNIFE FACTORY
Slow Food Västnyland’s 8th annual local food market is being held on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th of October 2017 from 10 am to 4 pm.
This year local producers, restaurants and other food-related groups from the ten municipalities in Western Uusimaa are gathering for the first time in the Old Knife Factory in Fiskars. This is the same big building where the popular Antiques Market is held with almost 10 000 visitors each year in July. In the same building there is already the Fiskarsin Panimo brewery and the Ägräs distillery with the Tap Room bar.
Kari Selkälä, Real Estate Director at Fiskars, explains why the food festival needs to move further up in the village, “The bridge to the Granary will be renewed during autumn and winter 2017-18 and there is simply not enough space for everyone in the Copper Smithy. One alternative would have been to split the food market into two places (the Copper Smithy and the Threshing Barn) but that would probably not be a popular solution as the two locations are far apart.“
EVERYTHING UNDER ONE ROOF
“In the Knife Factory all the producers and sellers can be inside under identical conditions. In addition, it is much easier to load and unload goods and produce. Outside the Knife Factory there is plenty of place for sales tents, animals and tractors. The surroundings might not be to everyone’s taste but we think that with a little bit of “styling” the Knife Factory could look suitably rustic in its own way”, says Selkälä. The Slow Food Västnyland association will hire professionals to do the visual planning of the food market.
The Finnish Championship in food handicraft takes place in Novia in Tammisaari a few days before the Slow Food festival. The prizes will be presented in Fiskars on Friday the 6th October. At the same time, we will also present the annual food culture prize of Finland’s Swedish Martha’s organisation. The Marthas are participating in the Slow Food festival as usual.
This year, food artisans from the whole of the Nordics region can present and sell their produce in Fiskars during the weekend of 7-8th October via Kustens Mat. Normally the Slow Food festival is reserved for producers from the ten communes in Western Uusimaa.
On the programme there will be a lot of cooking, food and drink tastings, and similar activities including a food fermentation workshop with Jenny “Surtanten” (Sour Aunty!) Neikell from Malmö, Sweden and a discussion with Swedish guests about the acute bee colony collapse situation.
The Local Food Market is the main event at the Slow Food Festival 2017. Many farmers, meat producers, sheep farmers and fishermen, as well as other food artisans and local restaurants have already announced their interest in participating”, says event coordinator Pontus Berglund.

Last year was a huge success with around 7 000 visitors and brisk trading. Slow Food Västnyland’s president Diana Lindholm is expecting at least 10 000 visitors this year.

All the products at the Slow Food Fair are produced or processed in the region. The Slow Food Fair offers a great opportunity to buy local food directly from the producers.

The producers all adhere to the principles of the Slow Food movement: the food should be, GOOD, CLEAN and FAIR. Among the producers, there will be fishermen, bakers, meat producers, farmers, cheese makers, beekeepers, market gardeners and various other food craftsmen.

There will also be an eating area in the Copper Smithy with a wide choice of local food on sale to eat right away.

The Slow Food Fair takes place in the old Knife factory Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm. Entrance to the area is one euro only. There is a 2€ charge for parking. Please bring cash.
