AKIBA

Rating 4.4 (average of 424 opinions)

AKIBA is a bar & restaurant for the people, focusing on Australia's position in the Asia Pacific.

AKIBA

AKIBA is inspired by the informal and exciting atmosphere of the great food halls or dining rooms that you find throughout the Asia-Pacific region. The food falls somewhere between Asian barbecue, raw bar and modern day yum cha, the cocktails are contemporary and creative without any played out prohibition or Mad Men references. AKIBA delivers a service style that is casual, relaxed and fun while still delivering an excellent product that is full of flavour. The design of the venue is very inviting with both the bar and the kitchen opened up to the floor so that the bartenders and chef can really be a part of every guest’s experience.

Owner operators, the brothers Pete and Mike Harrington, are keen on delivering a world-class level of service and ambience and their track record is good. Between them they have worked at Tetsuya’s, Aria, Forty One, Bel Mondo, Cadmus and Star Anise amongst others. With them will be GM Thomas Weis, who has managed Icebergs, Bambini Trust, Prospero Group and Pendolino. The restaurant will also have access to its own farm along with the brothers’ other much-lauded Canberra restaurant, Sage. The team is excited about creating a space that is exciting not just for Canberra but all of Australia; it is an approachable social hub rather than just a restaurant or bar.

Heading up the kitchen is Executive Chef Johnon Macdonald, who has manned the pans at Rockpool Sydney, Rockpool Bar & Grill Melbourne, Gingerboy, Morimoto NYC and Nobu London amongst others. Cooking over live fuel of wood and charcoal and channeling the spirit of AKIBA, Johnon delivers fresh local produce that will please any fan of the great Australian cooking tradition of barbecue while applying all of his culinary heritage and incorporating Asian technique and flavours. The food is sourced from Canberra’s incredible local produce while incorporating our position within the Asia/Pacific region.

The name AKIBA is inspired by a Japanese deity that is often depicted riding a white fox, wreathed in fire, and we’d like to think a good time. This deity was also the inspiration for the name of Tokyo’s famously lit up Akihabara or “Electric Town”. This name brings together the design from renowned Melbourne architect Adam Dettrick, of Movida fame amongst other designs, the venue’s location in the ActewAGL House (Canberra’s electricity/energy supplier) with its light sculptures or “Ossolites” by local Canberra artist Robert Foster, and the modern approach to the venue’s service, food and drinks programs.
