The Mercantile Cafe is owned by the Valhalla Heritage Society, which is a non profit organization, and operated by local community members.
Located in the heart of Valhalla Centre, Alberta, this historical building, known as the "Melsness Mercantile" was built in 1925 and operated as both a genral store and post office. In 1988, the Valhalla Heritage Society was formed and through the dedication of local volunteers the building was restored in 1994. The Melsness Mercantile has since been declared a provincial historical site.
The Mercantile is now home to the Mercantile cafe, the heritage room which is a museum that pays tribute to the area's Scandinavian heritage. A craft corrner that allows local artisans to display and sell their wares. Also, our favourite Norwegian gift shop. The Mercantile Cafe's main philosophy is "scratch cooking" offering savoury soups, hearty sandwiches on fresh homemade bread or buns, decadent pies, and various deserts. All products are made fresh, in house, using locally raised and Alberta grown products whenever possible.
