Sal’s Pizza was started in 2006 by two young Lazimpat boys determined to work themselves out of what can be a bleak future for youth in Kathmandu where employment prospects are even scarcer than educational opportunities. With the help of an older mentor the boys took on the challenge of opening a restaurant to secure their own futures and to provide a friendly community spot where foreign NGO workers mix with Nepali students playing chess after class.
Sal’s pizzas are New-York style with a Kathmandu twist. Sal’s uses imported mozzarella cheese, their own special tomato sauce recipe and fresh vegetable and meat toppings from the local market on freshly baked naan. Sal’s menu pleases many palettes and in a conscious effort to make both foreigners and Nepalis feel welcome, Sal’s now offers naanwich and buff momos as well.
