Barron's Bar & Grill started life as the Huntsman Steakhouse and is believed to have opened it's doors in November 1970. The part owners, Russell and Denise Borrell, designed and were involved in developing the restaurant. With the Tudor theme of an English hunt, a fox appearing on all the menus, and intimate booth seating mirroring the hunting picture of old English restaurants, it was never designed to match the English theme to the concept of steaks and salads, but undoubtedly it has worked and given the Huntsman a uniqueness that is still prevalent today. Many people will remember the large wooden Brown Door with the metal ring for a handle, as this was the only frontage to the restaurant for many years. It was beyond this door that the customers and the people who worked there, know what the Huntsman Steakhouse and the story of the restaurant really meant to them and how it changed their lives.
The Huntsman Steakhouse was taken over in 1974 by Leo Fisher, with some guidance from Ray Anderson, accountant and later paymaster, and the business was to prosper for the next 22 years. Under Leo's management, the Steakhouse was to become one of Dunedin's institutions along with Leo himself. In the 1980's, the frontage was changed from the Brown Door to a window with a glass door, allowing potential customers to view the restaurant inside before entering.
Now redeveloped into a restaurant bar open all day with a tropical theme and renamed Barron's Bar & Grill - "where it is always summer" - we aim to remind you of those endless summers in the Pacific and Asia -come in relax, imbibe some fine beer or wine, indulge yourself from our menu and enjoy
