In 1899 the Arizona Republic was the first newspaper to call Jerome "Wicked". A few years later in February of 1903 the New York Sun, then a thriving competitor to the New Your Times, crafted an article declaring Jerome to be the "Wickedest Town in America". Jerome was a lawless town of wild women & hard drinking men... a place saloons and dance halls lined the streets and wages were wasted in wicked pursuits. Wicked it was, and the name would stick!
