Opened on February 26th, 1982 by Angelica and Robert Jacoby, the original John O'Groats was located at the southwest corner of Manning Ave. and Pico Blvd. It was a 750 square foot A-frame building with a 20 seat counter. Immediately becoming known as one of Los Angeles’ best breakfast restaurants, John O'Groats moved only two years after its opening to it's most known on Pico and Overland.

Their reason for success was no secret. Mr. and Mrs. Jacoby insisted on purchasing the best available products; farm fresh eggs, thickly sliced lean bacon and fresh produce, while serving everyone with a smile. In the summer of 1994, Robert and Angelica's son Paul Tyler, an alumnus of Cornell's famed School of Hotel and Restaurant, became the managing partner. Paul has created some of the signature dishes that are a part of the O’Groats experience, including Huevos O’Groats and the Vegetarian Hash and is still this day managing partner for John O'Groats.
