Owned by partners Paul Morrow, Paul Post and Joseph Gray, the newest chapter in Hotel Nadeau history continues the legacy of hospitality.
The building and business had quite a history long before the new owners took over. While it was a nighttime hotspot for several generations of Massenans, Hotel Nadeau started serving up good times almost 85 years ago.
The original Hotel Nadeau was built by Thomas Nadeau in 1928 at the corner of Church and Andrews Streets. It was a two story building facing Andrews.
Mr. Nadeau built his hotel around a small one-story brick structure, which was erected in 1826 as a school house in District #16, Massena's second school building. That school was built by Martin P. Crowley at a cost of $272! The school house was constructed of red brick which was made and fired locally, and built atop a limestone foundation that came from the bottom of the nearby Grass Rriver. It replaced Massena's first school building which was erected in 1803 on Water Street, a short distance from East Orvis Street. (A New York State historical marker still stands on East Orvis pointing out the original school's location.)
The old school on Andrews Street was eventually disposed of by the trustees and rented to various tenants. It was used both for living quarters and businesses until it was purchased by Mr. Nadeau, who incorporated it into his new hotel.
