A former gem merchant’s mansion, now an elegant hotel of immaculate charm and character set in the heart of the 360 year old Dutch fort.

Galle Fort Hotel

The Galle Fort Hotel can trace its history back to the early years of the Dutch colonial period of Sri Lanka. It has been at the heart of the fort since its days as one of the finest private residences in the former commercial capital of the island. After more than 200 years of being a family home, (and gaining several architectural additions along the way), the property went through various other incarnations, among them a post office and an RAF officer’s mess, before becoming derelict. In 2003 the empty buildings were purchased and restored over a period of nearly 2 years.

The sensitive and pioneering project has ensured its status as one of the most significant architectural landmarks within the historic fort. This has in turn been recognised by UNESCO who in 2007 bestowed an award of distinction to the hotel for its sympathetic restoration and development. The fort, one of the best preserved in Asia, is one of Sri Lanka’s principle tourist attractions and one of 8 UNESCO World Heritage sites in Sri Lanka.
