Complex Medieval Unglerus

The restaurant is located in one of the most representative buildings of the village, placed exactly at the main entrance of the Fortified Church and having a great opening at Biertan's main square. The building is integrated in the architectural ensemble of the fortress. In the past, it served for many purposes including that of a prison.
The inner courtyard is arranged during summer time into a private terrace. Here our guests can admire the 500-year-old bastions.
The building was renovated based on an old painting found in the treasury of the Fortified Church and converted into a medieval restaurant with large chairs with studded leather backs, walls that feature huge paintings with knights and other medieval scenes, spears and shields and many other medieval decoratians, all of them creating a cosy, yet elegant atmosphere.
The restaurant has state-of-the-art equipment and can regularly accommodate up to 105 guests but for certain special events the number can be extended up to 140 persons.

Our pensions (Unglerus, Thomas, Michael) of 3 and 4 daises have been restored and renovated in harmony with typical local architecture. They are located in close proximity to the fortified church's walls from Biertan, now a UNESCO monument since 1933. Unglerus medieval restaurant, part of the architectural complex of the fortified church, is located at the entrance of the citadel, being a part of the third wall of defense. The restauration of Unglerus restaurant had as inspiration, an historical painting found in the fortified church treasury.

Unglerus
Unglerus Pension consists of two of Biertans largest old-type saxon houses, integrated into one functional unit after their renovation. The hotel is located on one of the main streets of the village, within a walking distance to the central square and Unglerus Restaurant. A stunning panorama over the entire village and the fortified church is offered from the top floor rooms and the top of the outer garden.
The architectural concept preserved the original medieval atmosphere: wrought iron medieval furniture, traditional lamps and mirrors handcrafted in Italy after local medieval design, sumptuous rooms, thick walls and hard wooden floors.
The semi basement of the first building is organized as a small reception and a breakfast/multifunctional room (30 places) with kitchen.
Unglerus Pension features a conference room with a capacity of 50 seats that can be hired with all necessary equipment.
The hotel is surrounded by a spacious terrace, a perfect place to relax, which can be organised for barbecues, campfires, outdoor medieval shows, or other kinds of entertainment.
The hill with the orchard behind the guesthouse offers an impressive décor: numerous terraces for growing vines, old saxon houses and citadel wich guard around the area; it all seems like an old story about a medieval village.
Unglerus Medieval Resort provids best hosting conditions and also many optional programs.

Thomas
Thoms Pension is another renovated old Saxon house. The architects worked hard to preserve the old-style of the house, keeping the hard wooden floor and doors in the rooms and all internal walls. They imposed also a medieval wrought iron style concept for this three-star pension. Bathrooms were re-equipped with old-style furniture.
A large traditional gate provides access to a inner courtyard of 400 sqm, where gueste will also find a nice, traditional barn. The courtyard offers intimate space for private events, BBQ, etc, or playground for children.
The pension is placed right in front of Unglerus Restaurant, with easy access and visibility from the main square of Biertan and a great view to the fortress. It has an excellent position and the best proximity to the restaurant and the fortified church.
Thomas Pension can regularly accommodate up to 12 guests in its two apartments, one at the ground floor and one at the top floor. Each apartment has about 100 sqm useable space and consists of one living room with an extandable sofa, two sleeping rooms and two bathrooms.
The semi basement of the building, formerly a large cellar, offers a usable surface of some 75 sqm, which can be arranged for various purposes accommodating needs of the guests.

Michael
The architects came up with a different design for this old saxon house. Replacing the wrought iron by elegant wood, they created a pleasant and cozy atmosphere. The lamps with their modern design create a perfect mix with more classical finishes such as the wooden floor and the ceiling beams of the top floor. However, an old-style still dominates the house.
Michael Pension is placed 200 m far from the main square and some 20 m from the Western wall of the fortress, offering a spectacular view to the Fortified Church. Two small rivers, flowing right beside and embracing the house from two sides, give a particular charm to the villa.
Set on a plot of 600 sqm, Michael Pension can regularly accommodate up to 12 guests in its three apartments of about 60 sqm each and one junior suite of 52 sqm. Each apartment has a sleeping room, a separate living room and a large bathroom.
At the ground floor there is a 66 sqm room with large windows overlooking the West walls of the fortress to East and a quiet inner courtyard of 335 sqm to West. Having a fully equipped state of the art kitchen, a dining and a living room, own bathroom and larder, this space is the ideal place to get togheter, spend some time for reading or just relaxing, or have a great meal with friends and familly.
Guests will find in our courtyard a splendid wooden gazebo (capacity of 10-12 person), some incredible big and sweet sour cherries in July and a very interesting local grape variety in September.
