The dream begins……..I have been travelling for quite a while now, looking for a little piece of paradise. I would build some cabins, create an organic food forrest that supplies my vego restaurant and live (until the next urge to move on) peacefully on the ocean. I found it here in Bocas del Toro, Panama, while travelling with my son, Ash Straney; a wonderfully gifted musician and an even better bartender.
We are both vegetarians and avid believers in health and organic food. I am a chef and have had many restaurants & cafes in my native Australia., together we plan on creating a business that gives back.
Isla Bastimentos is the largest of the islands in Bocas del Toro, on the Caribbean Ocean. The island, with it's distinctive Jamaican feel has no roads as such, so no cars. The people here are characters, warm & friendly, they love to laugh and show you a good time. With 4 of the world's 8 species of sea turtles; loggerheads from April to September, leatherbacks in May & June, hawksbills in July & green turtles in July & August coming ashore to nest, it truly is paradise. The Red Dart frog is everywhere and sloths lazily hang from the trees.
There is a marine park, Parque Nacional Marino for unbelievable snorkelling and diving of coral reefs and mangroves. Surf??? Wow, incredible waves!
The island is home to only around 600 people so makes for a relaxed stay. The Ngobe-Bugle village at Salt Creek is home to an indigenous tribe. About 60 thatched roof huts without electricity or running water make up the village. There is a school, a handicrafts store where hand made goods can be bought.
Our place when open early next year will have 6 cabins all with fabulous ocean views, solar power, rain water, organic gardens filled to overflowing with fruit, nuts, vegetables and herbs all for our vegetarian restaurant. We won't have a menu as such, will just prepare each day what is growing. Fresh, fresh, fresh!!!
