Λίγα λόγια για την ιστορία του Aigli Geni Hamam:

Το Γενί Χαμάμ (τουρκ. Yeni Hamam, νέο χαμάμ) είναι κτήριο της Οθωμανικής περιόδου στη γωνία των σημερινών οδών Κασσάνδρου και Αγίου Νικολάου στην Θεσσαλονίκη. Εικάζεται ότι χτίστηκε το τελευταίο τέταρτο του 16ου αιώνα από τον Χουσρέφ Κεντχουντά, κάτοχο ακινήτων στην Θεσσαλονίκη ο οποίος πιθανώς τελούσε χρέη Κεχαγιά (διαχειριστή) για τον Βεζύρη Σοκολού Μεχμέτ πασά. Λειτούργησε ως διπλό λουτρό με ξεχωριστά διαμερίσματα για άνδρες και γυναίκες, με τη συνηθισμένη διάταξη χώρων.

Το κτίριο έπαψε να λειτουργεί ως λουτρό μετά την απελευθέρωση της Θεσσαλονίκης, σε αντίθεση με τα υπόλοιπα χαμάμ της πόλης. Το 1919 περιήλθε στο Ελληνικό Δημόσιο και το 1937 αγοράστηκε από κάποιον ιδιώτη που το χρησιμοποίησε ως αποθήκη. Σήμερα παραμένει στην ιδιοκτησία ιδιώτη και χρησιμοποιείται ως χώρος πολιτιστικών εκδηλώσεων με το όνομα "Αίγλη".

Aigli Geni Hamam is a unique destination for exclusive dining, singular cocktails, and one-of-a-kind music events.

Historical Insights on Aigli Geni Hamam:
The Yeni Hamam (Turkish for new hamam i.e. public bath) building was built during Thessaloniki’s Ottoman occupation, on what is now the corner of Kassandrou and Agiou Nikolaou Streets.

It is believed that the building was constructed during the last quarter of the 16th century by Hüsrev Kethuda, owner of several properties in Thessaloniki, and likely a “Kehayia” (administrator) in the service of grand vizier Sokollu Mehmed Pasha. It functioned as a double public bath, which featured separate chambers for men and women, and followed the usual layout associated with hamam buildings.

In contrast with other public baths in the city, the Yeni Hamam closed down after Thessaloniki’s annexation from the Ottoman Empire. In 1919, the building became property of the Greek State, while, on 1937, it was bought by a private investor, who turned it into a warehouse.

Today, the building is still privately owned, and functions as a cultural event space, under the name “Aigli”.
